Fox Valley Literacy:

  • Promotes literacy awareness.

  • Provides free, one-to-one tutoring in Outagamie, Waupaca, northern Calumet, and northern Winnebago Counties, for adults in basic reading, writing, and speaking of English.

  • Recruits and trains volunteer tutors.

  • Matches tutors with interested and motivated students.

  • Arranges for convenient tutoring locations.

  • Provides opportunities for individual, small group and classroom instruction.

  • Works with employers to provide workplace literacy opportunities for their employees.

AmeriCorps Community Corps Member

Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) AmeriCorps Community Corps Member Position Host Site for this position is at Fox Valley Literacy, Appleton, WI Play a vital role in tackling our communities’ most pressing challenges as an AmeriCorps Community Corps member! Receive ongoing professional skills training and mentorship, gain work experience, build a professional network, and make an impact in your community! Complete your service term at Fox Valley Fox Valley Literacy uses the power of learning to transform lives and enrich the community. We offer individualized and small group English language classes, digital literacy, citizenship, and career upskilling classes for adults and cultural and pedagogical workshops for volunteers. Our mission is to create a community where everyone belongs and can live their full potential. Fox Valley Literacy has created a family-based heritage literacy program that will help HMong parents and children learn and preserve the HMong language. This program aims to strengthen intergenerational literacy and academic engagement, child development, family wellbeing, mental health, and cultural resiliency. We are looking for an AmeriCorps Community Corps Member to help with the HMong family program by supporting student recruitment, monitoring and evaluating the program, teaching HMong class as well as teach in our English language learning program. This opportunity is a great fit for you if you are interested in or passionate about: • child development and family wellbeing • community-based education and mental health projects • intergenerational literacy skills-building • heritage language preservation and transmission • immigrant and refugee wellbeing • HMong language(s), community(ies), and culture(s) • program implementation • program monitoring and evaluation • volunteer recruitment and management • teaching HMong • teaching English Position Description: This is a three-quarter time position offered through MCHS AmeriCorps Community Corps. The member hired will be serving their term at Fox Valley Literacy as the host site. Under the supervision of the Literacy Program Lead and the Program and Operations Director, the AmeriCorps Member will help teach, monitor, and evaluate the family literacy program. Responsibilities: • research child development and family wellbeing practices • assist with curriculum and lesson planning • assist with volunteer recruitment and training • support volunteer teachers and program assistants • teach or co-teach HMoob language lessons • build relationships with other community organizations and create collaborations • recruit HMong families and volunteers • talk with families about their experiences, goals, joys, hopes, and progress • document family progress and other program outcomes • serve as a teacher for students in our English Language Learning program • help coordinate English Language family services Preferred Background and Experience: • Familiarity with child and family development practices and principles • Bilingual HMong (White or Green) and English speaker, reader, and writer • Academic background in education, child development, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, linguistics, social work, social/human services, or a related field. • Previous volunteer, internship, coursework, or employment working with children or families • Commitment to and ability to follow confidentiality procedures • Active listening, cultural humility, and sensitivity • Attitude of non-judgment • Strengths-based attitude and approach • Ability to work independently and as a team • Comfort using the Internet, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and research databases (i.e. google scholar) • Reliability and follow-through Position Type and Benefits: • Training will be provided by both AmeriCorps and Fox Valley Literacy • Position is based in Appleton, WI with some remote opportunities • 25-30 hours per week (1200 hours requirement for three-quarter time position) • Most work will be completed Monday-Thursday between 9AM and 7PM • Service Term Start and End Date: January 6th – August 30, 2025 • Benefits include flexible schedule, modest bi-weekly living allowance, holidays off, negotiable time off, forbearance for most federally guaranteed student loans, and $5,176.50 educational award for successful service.
